On October 3, 1998 the oilheating industry and NAOHSM lost a good friend and a leader in technical education, Dave Nelsen of Kurz Oil Co. At the time of his death, Dave was the new Education Chairman for NAOHSM. He was spearheading some major educational projects. As a tribute to Dave and to honor his memory, our then President Bob Boltz, announced the formation of the Dave Nelsen Scholarship.
Knowing Dave’s belief in education, Past President Bob Boltz and Dan Holohan along with others decided to honor Dave with this annual scholarship. Many have contributed to the fund but one individual stands out for his commitment and that is Dan Holohan. Dan made it his personal goal to get this account to $100,000 so that funds would always be available to those wishing to further their education. Dan contributed by hosting seminars with the funds going to the Dave Nelsen Scholarship Fund. To date, because of the generosity of many, our scholarship fund remains in the $100,000 range and between us and a couple of manufacturers we have awarded about $140,000.00 in awards to 70 recipients.
Funds are raised for this project through our golf tournament held during our annual convention and trade show. We thank all of those that support holes and we thank Thermo Pride for continually donated the prize money and in 2009 Peerless donated gift bags.
Because of low interest rates for the past couple of years, we needed an additional fundraiser. At our 2009 event we hosted an auction and that added another $3200.00 to our fund.
Back in 2006, Delavan became our first manufacturer to sponsor a scholarship, next came Taco who sponsors the Jack Sullivan Award, last year, Honeywell added at third award and this year Weil-McLain donated a fourth award. At our Awards Banquet, we invite these people to present winners with their scholarships.
To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Dave’s passing, golf hats were given out at the tournament and "no socks" Nelsen was honored by one of our award winners – Instructor of the Year, Jeff Sweda.
Our panel of independent judges reviewed the applications and essays and the winners were announced. The 2009 winners were invited to attend our annual Awards Banquet held this year at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center, Hershey, PA.
